Featured Canadian Artist-Hannah Franklin
Hannah Franklin is a highly accredited senior Canadian artist that enjoys working with mixed mediums. Her paintings and sculptures have been exhibited on a global scale. Her work is found in many prestigious Canadian public collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, le Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal and Le Musee du Quebec in Quebec City. The Canada Council's Art Bank holds many of her sculptures amongst other collectors such as the Lavalin Corporation, The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the Quebec Cabinet amongst others.
Watch for up coming artists Kimberly Vallee (contemporary artist) and Andrea Lavoie (sports scenes in oil).
The Canadian watercolor gallery
This month we feature the art work of dry brush specialist Peter law. Peter paints in a photo realist style and does not conform to the traditional style of broad washes and loose effects common to wet brush artists who incorporate a more “painterly style”. Peter can paint in all mediums but prefers watercolor. His latest works done in pencil crayon are fantastic. In 2009 Canadian Art Prospector will be submitting Peter’s art to international photo realism/dry brush competitions where we expect that he will excel.
In direct contrast to Peter law, Louise Santini paints in a very loose painterly style, evident in the fluidity, transparency, and spontaneity of her work.
Louise considers herself to be a “Plein Air” artist, and often paints historic landmarks in western Quebec capturing architecture unique to the region, or country scenes of the Charlevoix region where she lived as a child. When painting outdoors becomes inaccessible Louis enjoys painting nudes throughout the winter months.
Watch for variety of excellent Canadian watercolorists in the Months to come!
Featured Canadian Collector-W Trudeau
Like his Grandfather before him, W. Trudeau has collected art for the better part of his adult life. The Trudeau collection has something for everyone, from the collector looking for a rare piece of Canadian art by an accredited artist, to the buyer who might be speculating on a fine piece of art.
The Arthur Sheldon Phillips Collection
Sheldon Phillips and the Thames barge
Arthur Sheldon Phillips RBSA (1914-2001) was an outstanding painter in the British tradition of watercolor painting whose work has become increasingly sought after amongst collectors and marine enthusiasts. He is represented in the collections of the City Museum Art Gallery Birmingham, England, Baron Philipe de Rothschild, the Royal Mail and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists to which he was elected.
Phillips was acclaimed to be extremely Knowledgeable on the architecture of the east coast fleet. The Thames barge or sprit barge has a unique structure that enables just two men to navigate the 90’ vessel with a sail area of 3000’-5000’, carrying 250 tons of cargo to and from various continental European ports. At the turn of the century there were 2000 sail barges on registry, today roughly 24 exist as charters. Many enthusiasts and collectors alike have delighted in Sheldon Phillips paintings of the annual barge race, a race that still exists today despite the dwindling number of participants.
In 1981, A.S Phillips spent a summer in the Lac St. Louis region of Montreal. With a passion for seascapes, and cityscapes, he was naturally drawn to the municipalities of Pointe-Claire, Beaconsfield, and Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. Incredible works of art emerged that summer depicting cityscapes and marine paintings of the West Island as they existed over 25 years ago.
